Laith Mcgregor on Art Nation
I was watching TV yesterday afternoon in that drowsy way that you do on a Sunday after a night out.
Unfortunately I mean watching in its most literal sense. I’m a multi-tasker you see, so I was also watching Gossip Girl on my laptop, and Gossip Girl won in the audio stakes.
The visual impression that Sunday Arts conveyed of Melbourne-based, Brisbane-grown biro artist Laith Mcgregor, however, was such that I went onto the ABC Arts website for a re-watch. Lucky you, you get the share it with me this time.
And yes, I said biro artist.
How cool is that.
Mcgregor himself points out that the biro isn’t generally accepted as a legitimate tool in an art context, but that it helps to create an affinity between the work and its audience.
And I think it does. As soon as you see that brilliant blue colour, you know what it is. You use one every day. You’ve written pages and pages in exam booklets, made drawings and doodles on note paper whilst on the phone at work using this very item. With the biro medium comes an association with the everyday.
I like it.
FYI he prefers Bic.
