Gonkar Gyatso at Jan Murphy
I loved this exhibition.
Gyatso’s work provide a reflection upon the melding of cultures, particularly drawing upon the idea of cultural hybridism. Of Tibetan origin, Gyatso is now based in London, and it is clear that his work explores the issues of identity that pertain to this.
This message is portrayed extremely effectively in these latest works, which are both poignant and intricately beautiful.
The works are made up of tiny images, usually magazine cut outs and common-place stickers, that make up the larger image, with the overall effect being one of a juxtaposition of cultures.

The point Gyatso appears to be making, however, is that two apparently divergant cultures can exist within one being, possibly even in harmony with one another.
What I particularly liked about these works was the way in which they could be enjoyed both from a distance and also right up close. The pain-staking detail within each work is incredible, whilst the overall effect, upon stepping back, is one that is harmonious and beautiful.
I found myself returning to each work a number of times to view it up close, and the intense detail meant that I found something new each time.
